Sleep Researcher Lets Her 5 Cats Choose Her Sleeping LocationsCats can apparently sleep anywhere, but have certain preferred locations. And they sleep a lot. Cats typically sleep 12-16 hours a day. Do they know something that we humans don’t?Yuri Nakahashi, a doctoral student at Hosei University, decided to find out. Spoon & Tamago reports on her work. She has five cats and speculated that they chose sleeping locations for optimal conditions of mood, light, warmth, and coziness. For 24 nights, she imitated their sleeping locations and measured her sleep with a FitBit.Quantitively, there was no significant difference in the sleep acquired. But, more personally, Nakahashi reported feeling excited about not knowing where she would be sleeping on any given night. She also received increased affection from her cats, who apparently Nakahashi's desire to be more cat-like.-via Super Punch#cats #sleep
Akkodha The OK Cat Says "OK" to EverythingMeet Akkodha, the agreeable cat that caught the attention of the Internet with her way of saying “ok” to every question her owners ask her. The cat was brought home from the humane society in 2006 by Dan Spano and his wife. The couple noticed the feline’s talkative nature. “She has her chirps and meows, and every day when I wake up, she always talks to me,” Spano told The Dodo.Spano then started to have conversations with Akkodha like she was a person, and the cat would meow like she was saying “ok” back to him. “And just from years and years of playing around with her and going back and forth, we’ve gotten to where she is now,” Spano shared. Their interactions are uploaded on TikTok where others smile and like their conversations. Image credit: The OK Cat / Instagram#cats #talkingcat #TikTok #Akkodha #OK
This Custom Aquarium Has a Cat Observation PortMelissa Krieger is the human servant of Jasper and Willow. She fully embraces her role, as amply demonstrated by this custom aquarium that she had built by Aquatics and Exotics in Cincinnati, Ohio. That company, I gather, normally makes luxury aquaria for business settings. But it was willing to produce this remarkable piece for two cats with special tastes.Related: Leon the Lobster
Mostaccioli the Cat Looks Like Freddie MercuryHey, little rockstar!Meet Mostaccioli, a female British Shorthair that caught the attention of the Internet. The feline has a mustache that sort of resembles the late Freddie Mercury’s iconic facial hair. Because of Mostaccioli’s uncanny yet adorable likeness to the musician, people have been dropping likes and cat puns in its Instagram account. From ‘Freddie Purrcury’ to ‘Don’t stop me-oww,’ it’s cool seeing how far the Internet’s creativity runs in crafting cat puns for this feline. The traction of Mostaccioli’s Instagram page, which she shares with her sister Izanami, a Scottish Fold, helps their owner, Natalie, in raising money for Cats Of San Bernardino – a non-profit organization that is “dedicated to saving the lives of cats and kittens in the city of San Bernardino, CA.” Image credit: izanami.and.mostaccioli / Instagram #cats #Instagram #lookalike #FreddieMercury

Woman Turns Her Cat into a Zen GardenI would be covered with additional scars from my cat if I tried this. I’ll leave the meditative gardening to Sarah Holland-Batt, a writer and literary critic in Australia. Her cat is very relaxed and trusting. She gets into the mood and ambiance of Zen gardening, allowing Holland-Batt to rake her fur like it is sand and apply rocks for the miniature and delicate landscaping that Japanese rock gardens are famous for.Holland-Batt notes that her pussycat has “big diva energy” and worries that she will now become only more domineering. I don’t think so. As the Buddha said, “Those who are truly wise will remain unmoved by feelings of happiness and suffering, fame and disgrace, praise and blame, gain and loss.” The cat cares not whether she is famous or unknown.-via My Modern Met#zen #zengarden #cats
Why We Think Cats are Not Friendly: They're the Only Asocial Animal Humans have Ever DomesticatedWhy is our relationship with cats so different than our relationship with dogs? The answer might be found in how we domesticated these asocial pets. It is said that the earliest domesticated cats suddenly showed up on Neolithic villages in the Middle East about 10,000 years ago. Even at that time, they did not depend on us humans for food. They searched for food on their own. From the beginning, cats have always been self-determined and self-sufficient. They didn't need us that much. And their descendants, the modern domesticated cats that we have today, still carry with them those qualities. Learn more about how we domesticated cats over at BBC. Bohemian Catsody: Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, but with CatsThe British-based rock band Queen is known for their dramatic, anthemic, and inspiring songs that never get old through generations. The band was able to create a masterpiece with opera and rock harmonizing beautifully together. The Queen classic Bohemian Rhapsody bagged multiple awards and is still a hit today.Shirley Șerban shares on YouTube a parody of the song but it’s all about cats. And just like Queens, cats are royalty. The song purrfectly describes cats' interaction with their human servants and what goes around their daily life. Freddie Mercury, who was a cat lover, would surely love this. Image: Shirley Șerban via Youtube#BohemianRhapsody #Queen #Cats #ShirleySerban
Clever Cat Cons People Into Buying Cat Food in Grocery StoreThis cat should be in Slytherin!A stray cat in Turkey has found a way to get food from strangers with just his patience. How? “Cats of the Wedge” Tour 2019: A Walking Tour of Window Cats in Minneapolis Draws Hundreds of VisitorsThe Wedge, Minneapolis — People had tried to convince John Edwards to cancel the annual cat tour because of bad weather. They pointed out the oncoming rain and the possibility that everyone might get wet during the event. But Edwards did not budge. He still decided to hold the event on that fateful day. And on that day in 2019, two miracles happened. The first one was that over 300 people showed up on the 3rd annual "Cats of the Wedge Walking Tour." Only around 30 people attended the event in 2018, so this was indeed a very welcome change. The second miracle that happened was the sun "never stopped shining."Throughout the tour, those who kept count stated that they saw more than 50 cats, most of which were spotted at windows. It was a fun and lovely time for everyone.Edwards, the event's organizer, documents the event over at The Wedge Times-Picayune.Here are some photos from the Cats of the Wedge tour. The rest are on the website.Image above: Spoooge McDuck on Reddit, images below: Wedge LIVE!#Cats #Minneapolis #TheWedge #CatsOfTheWedge

The Strange Effect of Trespassing Cats on Major League BaseballEarlier this month, a cat ran out onto the field at Yankee Stadium, interrupting the Yankees-Orioles game. The cat became a viral star, but what happened to the teams? Since then, the Yankees have won 17 of 20 games, but the Orioles haven't won any!We would not still be discussing this cat three weeks later if the Orioles losing streak didn’t represent the seventh longest skid in Major League Baseball in the last 100 years. The Orioles are the worst team in baseball, so it’s possible this post-cat slide is a coincidence. At first it seemed like a fun, random event. But the fact that the O’s dropped 18 straight makes it feel like something shady is going on here. Was this cat sent by a baseball witch to curse the O’s? Let’s investigate.
