Endangered Black Rhino Baby is Named KyivRampant poaching has reduced the world population of eastern black rhinoceros down to around 800. Hence, whenever a new calf is born, it’s such an important milestone.Recently this Czech zoo celebrated that milestone. The little one was born in the Dvur Kralove zoo on March 4 and promptly named Kyiv. The name was given in honor of the people of Ukraine who are currently defending their country from invasion. It’s suited given the rhino too is fighting its species’ extinction by being born. From the time Dvur Kralove zoo first received a black rhino in 1971, 47 have been born in their park. Many of them are now spread in zoos all around the world, but nine have been released back to their African habitats.Image: Petr David Josek/AP#rhino #BlackRhino #Kyiv #zoo
Daisy the Rhino Gets a Mud BathA baby rhinoceros named Daisy (previously at Supa Fluffy) is being raised at Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary in South Africa. She was orphaned at birth, most likely due to poachers. Daisy battled a nasty infection as a newborn, but with human care, she pulled through and is now thriving. With no mother to teach her how to roll in the mud, her carers are giving almost two-month-old Daisy her first mud bath! Mud helps to keep a rhino's skin moisturized and protects them from sun damage, heat, and parasites. Watch her zoom around with joy when she's completely covered! The zebra foal you see is Modjadji, Daisy's best friend. -via reddit#rhino #rhinoceros #CareforWildRhinoSanctuary #SouthAfrica
Baby White Rhino is Named Queenie to Mark Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee Year“I thought it might be a bit presumptuous to call our new baby Elizabeth, so I have christened her Queenie instead. I think it is a perfect name for a young lady rhino,” said Reggie Heyworth, managing director of Cotswold Wildlife Park who named a new animal after Queen Elizabeth. The calf was named in honor of the 70th year of the Queen’s service on the throne.Videos of the newborn white rhino were shared by the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens in Burford, Oxfordshire. She was seen bounding around in the park’s rhino paddock and solar-powered rhino house after being in an enclosure since her birth.Queenie was the fifth female baby rhino to be born in a row and the latest animal to be named after a royal family member. In fact, a bactrian camel at the park was named Louis after the Queen’s great-grandson because he was born on the same day.
The Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Florida Restarts Rhino Encounter ProgramAfter a 3 year hiatus, the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Florida has reintroduced the Rhino Encounter experience. In 2019, a 2-year-old girl was hurt when she slipped through the Rhino Encounter exhibit's bars by mistake. Her mother, whose arms were hurt was also transported to the hospital for treatment at the time. The tiny girl was rescued in a matter of seconds, but she did suffer some injuries. This event caused management to halt the Rhino encounter. Now the Brevard Zoo is giving the Rhino Encounter a second chance. Management at the zoo has made some adjustments to the experience in hopes of improving the safety. As a result, the age requirement has been altered, the netting around the steel bars has been inserted, and some safety procedures have been established. A few days a week, the zoo is now available for visitors to observe the rhinos up close and personal. In addition, guests must be at least 7 years old to participate in the activity. Young Zebra Foal Befriends One-Day-Old Baby RhinoThe Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary in South Africa took in a one-day-old rhino calf. The calf, named Daisy, was incredibly weak and extremely vulnerable. The staff of the sanctuary took turns taking care of the poor baby animal. The calf was vulnerable to illness because she didn’t have colostrum from her mother’s milk. While Daisy was recovering, she befriended another patient at the sanctuary’s ICU. Modjadji, a young zebra foal, started keeping the baby rhino company, befriending her. The two could be found cuddling and nuzzling together as if helping each other to heal. The sanctuary posted a video of the two animals hanging out on their Facebook page. "She has befriended little Daisy and is really offer a lot of comfort. She is incredibly gentle with her, and the two seem to be good friends already," they wrote. Image credit: Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary #healing #rescue #animals #rhino #zebra #CareforWildRhinoSanctuary #SouthAfrica
White Rhinoceros Fights a Cape Buffalo in a Head-to-Head Battle in South African Kariega Game ReserveThere was no bell to start the fight, but perhaps the rhino and the Cape buffalo heard it in their ears as they charged head-to-head on the grassy arena of the Kariega Game Reserve. Other buffalo gathered around the two combatants to watch the fight, while a female rhino with her calf watched the action from a safer distance.A cloud of dust formed as the two animals butted heads against each other. Despite the buffalo weighing less than the rhino (rhinos can weigh up to 6,000 pounds, and buffaloes only weigh 1,500 pounds), the buffalo displayed determination and proved to be a worthy opponent. It is worth noting that Deryck Howarth, the ranger who captured this footage, also captured similar footage three years ago. Said footage featured the same rhino and a buffalo duking it out. The buffalo three years ago may be the same as this one.Watch the full video below.(Image Credit: Kariega Game Reserve via Facebook)#Buffalo #Rhino #Animals #SouthAfrica
