Two Otters and a LifesaverOtters are excellent swimmers and don't need a lifesaver. But Kotaro and Hana (previously at Supa Fluffy) are infinitely curious about anything that's new. They want to explore this strange new object, but are wary about it at the same time. What's that new thing doing in our pool? How is it floating? It doesn't take long before Kotaro is trying to tear the lifesaver apart, while Hana mainly complains about it. In some parts of this video, you get the idea that the otters are just showing off for the camera. They are very good at that! If you get a chance, check out the custom t-shirt Kotsumet (the human) is wearing at the beginning of the video. #otter #KotaroandHana #lifesaver
Aquarium Discovers Penguins Can Be Picky EatersCat owners know the pain of picky eating. Try swapping out a store brand cat food for their Fancy Feast and be ready to feel the wrath of your spoiled pet as he shows his disdain. It turns out that cats aren't the only animals that act this way. To deal with inflated prices, an aquarium in Japan is gradually cutting back on the quality of food for their animals. Some of the residents are having none of it. Hakone-en Aquarium, in the Kanagawa prefecture, switched out 10% of the usual fatty aji, also known as Japanese horse mackerel, for the cheaper saba to feed the penguins, seals, and otters in May. They had planned to use the cheaper fish at 30-40% by July. However, the penguins know the difference, and some have refused to eat the less expensive fish. They aren't shy about showing their displeasure, either! The more discriminating birds aren't going without. For those who refuse to eat the cheaper fish, accommodations have been made so that they get their daily nutrition. Picky eating for the win! -via Fark#penguin #otter #fish #aquarium #diet
Three-legged Dog Jumps in River to Save Baby OtterGus is a Goldendoodle who lives in Minnesota. He had a cancerous tumor removed last year, and this year doctors found more cancer and amputated his leg in February. Gus hasn't been swimming since he lost his leg, and his people were afraid he'd never swim again. But on Easter Sunday, Gus suddenly jumped into the St. Croix River! He swam about 50 feet out and came back with a baby river otter in his mouth, which he deposited at his family's feet. The otter was taken to the Wildlife Rehabilitaton Center of Minnesota, where the pup was given round-the-clock care. They said the otter was too young to be in the river, and was dangerously close to death. However, after a couple of days, the otter was doing much better. You can see a video of the baby feeding at Facebook. Gus, as you can tell, is a good boy. -via Fark#dog #otter #rescue
A Romp of Otters Meet a Vacuum CleanerOtters are adorable whatever they are doing, but these otters in Japan are extra cute as they try to decipher this unusual machine called a vacuum cleaner. What is it? It makes a lot of noise, it makes the wind blow funny, and it's coming after us! They swing back and forth between curiosity and trepidation as they try to determine whether the vacuum is a friend or foe. They get closer to see what's going on, but not too close! Meanwhile, I've learned there are several collective nouns for otters. The best is "romp," as in a romp of otters. -via Laughing Squid#otter #vacuumcleaner
Do Otters See Optical Illusions?Otters are smart, adorable, curious, and playful, but they normally do not make good house pets. Lucky for us, we can enjoy them on video and avoid cleaning up after them! Hand-raised otters Kotaro and Hana receive extensive enrichment activities, and the latest is an optical illusion rug. This rug is designed to look like a hole in the floor. Kotaro and Hana are pretty surprised to see it at the bottom of the stairs -as we all would be. Hana is game to jump right down the hole, while Kotaro is more cautious. They soon get used to it as just a rug, but they are still up for playtime!#otter #illusion #KotaroandHana
Orangutans and Otters Share a Home and FriendshipPairi Daiza is a private zoo in Belgium. They have a group of critically endangered orangutans who appeared to enjoy showing off for visitors and engaging with humans. But then the zoo closed during the pandemic. While the zookeepers engaged with the apes as much as they could, the orangutans got bored and seemingly lonely without the bustling crowds. What to do? Let the animals entertain each other! The zoo brought their colony of river otters in to the orangutan enclosure.
