Happy National Black Cat Appreciation Day!

August 17th is a day set aside to show appreciation for black cats. Black cats have an undeserved bad reputation because 1. they have been labeled as "bad luck" in the past, and 2. because their facial expressions can be hard to see, and they often don't photograph well. But black cats deserve love and happy home just as much as any cat. Black cats are often overlooked in shelters, and are the hardest category to find homes for.

ā€‹Best Friends Animal Society is an animal advocacy group that runs shelters in several major cities and also networks with shelters across the country. They are highlighting some of their adoptable black cats (called minipanthers) to celebrate National Black Cat Appreciation Day.

Cats of Yore has a Twitter thread celebrating wonderful black cats both past and present, and in art, too.

See more black cats in the Twitter thread, and people are showing off their black cats in the replies, too. If those aren't enough black cats to fill your desires, see more at the Facebook group For the Love of Black Cats. And more videos here and here.
