American Snout Butterflies Invade Central TexasSwarms of the American Snout butterfly were reported throughout the Central Texas corridor, the Hill Country, and Austin recently. But their emergence is not alarming, nor is it harmful.Butterflies, like bees, are excellent pollinators through plant pollination.Molly Meck, an entomologist, states that these butterflies are simply looking for food "and a place to mate and lay eggs." While American snout butterflies generally move together in a northward direction, they don't have a directional pattern. Meck also theorizes that this year's emergence was likely caused by environmental changes (examples are weather and moisture). If you live in Texas now, you've probably seen these insects in the skies. Or maybe you've seen them accidentally splatter across your windshield as you drive on the freeway (may those unfortunate creatures rest in peace). Meck, however, notes that this year's emergence is milder than previous years. The emergence of American snout butterflies vary in duration. Some only last a few hours, while others last for several weeks.(Image Credit: Ospre3yy/ Wikimedia Commons)#Butterflies #AmericanSnoutButterflies #Insects #Texas
Pink Floyd the Flamingo Who Escaped from a Kansas Zoo in 2005, was Just Spotted in TexasNearly 17 years ago, flamingos No. 492 and No. 347 fled from the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas, when the zoo staff forgot to clip their feathers again. Ever since their escape, one of the flamingos, No. 492, has been spotted in various places in the United States.A few weeks ago, the Coastal Fisheries Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department posted a video featuring No. 492 (also known as "Pink Floyd") walking through Cox Bay near Port Lavaca. It would seem, the agency joked, that the pink bird, "has returned from the dark side of [the] moon."It is believed that Pink Floyd is about 27 years old, which means that the flamingo in question might have only few years left, as experts believe that flamingos in the wild can live until about 30.(Image Credit: Coastal Fisheries - Texas Parks and Wildlife via Facebook)#Flamingo #Wild #Funny #Texas #PinkFloyd #SedgwickCountyZoo
