Rampant poaching has reduced the world population of eastern black rhinoceros down to around 800. Hence, whenever a new calf is born, it’s such an important milestone.&nbsp;Recently this Czech zoo celebrated that milestone. The little one was born in the Dvur Kralove zoo on March 4 and <a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-kyiv-europe-rhinoceros-9548a683fc26a923f7c47f14f9ed4109" alt="promptly named Kyiv" class="on">promptly named Kyiv</a>. The name was given in honor of the people of Ukraine who are currently defending their country from invasion. It’s suited given the rhino too is fighting its species’ extinction by being born.&nbsp;From the time Dvur Kralove zoo first received a black rhino in 1971, 47 have been born in their park. Endangered Black Rhino Baby is Named Kyiv

Mother Nature does not take a break during wartime. On February 27, after a night of shelling that caused explosions to boom around the zoo, the Kyiv Zoo added two new animals to their population- newborn baby goats! <a href="https://www.facebook.com/zoo.kyiv.ua/videos/909403476421876/" alt="See the goats in a Facebook video.&nbsp;" class="on">See the goats in a Facebook video.&nbsp;</a>​

The Kyiv Zoo says they haven't lost any animals yet, and they are making arrangements to keep their residents from being stressed. Some animals have been moved to inside enclosures or even underground structures. <a href="https://www.cengnews.com/news/nature-does-not-stop-says-ukraines-kyiv-zoo-which-has-welcomed-baby-goats-294556.html">Zookeepers are staying with their charges</a>, and they have enough food for all as of now. In other zoo news, <a href="https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20220304-lions-tigers-evacuated-from-ukraine-to-poland">six lions and six tigers</a> from the Kyiv Zoo endured a two-day drive to Poland. They were transported along with two other wild cats and a wild dog, 1000 kilometers to safety at the border.
