It began as a funny picture of a cat poking its head through a hole in the ceiling, watching the folks below. Over time, ceiling cat got its own lore. It came to be an analogy for judgement, as the cat is "looking down" on us. It evolved to be a deity in LOLcat culture, a metaphor for God, and is now often assumed to be white. Its converse, Basement Cat, is of course black and represents Satan.
