The Mysterious Disappearance of the World's Most Famous Poodle

Russian dog breeder Alexis Pulaski became obsessed with poodles in 1939, and his efforts to perfect the breed may have led to the poodle craze of the 1950s. Or, to be more specific, his poodle named Pulaski's Masterpiece made everyone want a dog just like him. Masterpiece was a champion, perfectly proportioned, exquisitely groomed, and well behaved. The poodle won numerous dog show titles and did tricks that impressed royalty and celebrities. Pulaski was once offered $25,000 for Masterpiece but turned it down, as Masterpiece was worth much more for what he earned for modeling gigs and stud service.

By 1953, Masterpiece was leading a dog's life, having the run of Pulaski's kennel, being tended to by a professional staff, eating the best food, and being an all-around good boy. Then he vanished. Police in 13 states were notified, and log lovers all over were on the lookout for Masterpiece. Read about the life and mysterious disappearance of Masterpiece at Mental Floss.
