In 2013, the Eastern Barred Bandicoot was declared extinct in the wild on mainland Australia. Now, eight years later, Lily D’Ambrosio, the Minister for Energy, Environment, and Climate Change announced the recent change in the conservation status of the animal. The Eastern Barred Bandicoot is no longer extinct in the wild; it is now only endangered.
The change in the conservation status is mainly thanks to the efforts of both volunteers and government agencies.
With this remarkable achievement, the 30-year captive breeding program of Zoos Victoria can now end.
The Victorian government is said to have spent over $5.5 million in support of the recovery program.
