Cocaine Hippos Are People Too, Well at Least Legally According to the U.S. District Court in CincinnatiDuring his reign as the King of Cocaine in Colombia, the drug lord Pablo Escobar illegally imported hippos into the country. Since their sudden introduction in Colombia, the hippo population there went up to somewhere between 65 and 80, causing concerns about the potential harm these animals might cause to the local biodiversity.The Colombian government is currently debating whether these hippos should be killed or sterilized (although a government agency has already started to sterilize some of the hippos). While we see these "cocaine hippos" as just animals, the US Court in Cincinnati sees them as "interested persons" with legal rights.
