Patron, the Ukrainian Hero, Awarded MedalA small Jack Russell terrier named Patron is one of the many Ukrainians stepping up to defend the country. Since the above video was released, Patron had added to his accomplishments by detecting more than 200 hidden bombs and landmines in Ukraine. He's only two-and-a-half, but he's become a symbol if the fight among Ukrainians and sympathizers on social media. On Sunday, Patron and his handler Myhailo Iliev were honored at a ceremony at which president Volodimir Zelenskyy awarded them with a special medal for heroism. Zelenskyy said, "I want to award those Ukrainian heroes who are already clearing our land of mines. And together with our heroes - a wonderful little sapper Patron who helps not only to neutralize explosives, but also to teach our children the necessary safety rules in areas where there is a mine threat." Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also attended the medal ceremony in Kyiv.
Magawa The Landmine Sniffing Giant Pouch Rat has DiedThis January 2022, a hero is laid to rest. Magawa the landmine-sniffing HeroRAT had been the ripe old age of 8 when he died.​Magawa, an African giant pouched rat, was born November 2013 in a landmine detection rat training and breeding center run by non-profit APOPO in Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania. In 2016, Magawa moved to Siem Reap, Cambodia to pursue a career where he found over 100 landmines, saving the lives of many Cambodians, and became the non-profit's most successful HeroRAT.After his retirement last year, Magawa led a healthy life until an unexpected drop in energy and loss of appetite in his last days.
