If you've been watching the scary and devastating news reports from Florida as hurricane Ian slams the state's west coast, take a break and watch something a little more hopeful. Megan Cruz Scavo weathered the storm at her parent's home inland from the Florida coast. Her boyfriend was at his parents' house at Bonita Beach, south of Fort Myers. They say that house is built to withstand a hurricane. The family spotted a large ginger cat that had found high ground on top of the A/C unit.

Look at all that rushing water! The boyfriend waded out anyway and approached the cat carefully. Who knows how panicked it could be? But the cat seemed eager to find any port in the storm, and allowed itself to be carried inside. In 1938, the San Diego Zoo acquired two giraffes from east Africa. Getting the giraffes from Kenya to California was a monumental task, especially once the ship they were on encountered the Great Hurricane of 1938. They survived, although the female was injured. But that was only the beginning of their long journey, as they had to undergo quarantine and then ride across the US by truck. The giraffes weren't all that keen on the trip, but Lofty and Patches became superstars along the way.
