Fish at Death's Door Undergoes an Amazing TransformationIf you are going to keep a pet, no matter what kind of animal it is, you need to learn about it and be prepared to meet its needs. Pet stores, however, operate on volume. They assume that an animal will spend little time in their care before going on to a permanent home. That can lead to adverse effects. Emma The Cabbage is studying to be a vet tech, and she's spent years learning to care for fish. Emma spotted a fish in distress at a pet shop, pale, floating, and not moving except to breathe. The store didn't even charge her for it, and Emma brought the fish home for some TLC. After a few weeks of intense care, the little fish changed from a sick nondescript minnow to a beautiful rainbow betta! It's amazing what a little knowledge and the willingness to care for a pet will do. This fish won the lottery in that aspect.#fish #rescue #recovery #betta
Do Fish Like to Play Games? Have you ever tried playing with the fish in your aquarium with a laser light? It turns out they are quite fascinated with chasing it and even competing with each other to catch it. Some might say they are just trying to catch something to eat, but fish don't tend to eat fluorescent bits of food that don't smell. This video is a supplemental illustration that goes along with a scientific paper that must have been a lot of fun to produce, called Gills Just Want to Have Fun: Can Fish Play Games, Just like Us? They tested laser lights on 66 different fish species, and found that 80% of them showed inquisitive behavior when the light was presented. Whether we can call this "play" is another question, but that all comes down to how we define words. They sure seem to be having fun! Another conclusion from the study is that the best color laser for fish play is red. -via Boing Boing#fish #play #game #laserlight
Aquarium Discovers Penguins Can Be Picky EatersCat owners know the pain of picky eating. Try swapping out a store brand cat food for their Fancy Feast and be ready to feel the wrath of your spoiled pet as he shows his disdain. It turns out that cats aren't the only animals that act this way. To deal with inflated prices, an aquarium in Japan is gradually cutting back on the quality of food for their animals. Some of the residents are having none of it. Hakone-en Aquarium, in the Kanagawa prefecture, switched out 10% of the usual fatty aji, also known as Japanese horse mackerel, for the cheaper saba to feed the penguins, seals, and otters in May. They had planned to use the cheaper fish at 30-40% by July. However, the penguins know the difference, and some have refused to eat the less expensive fish. They aren't shy about showing their displeasure, either! The more discriminating birds aren't going without. For those who refuse to eat the cheaper fish, accommodations have been made so that they get their daily nutrition. Picky eating for the win! -via Fark#penguin #otter #fish #aquarium #diet
Family Built a Special Custom Aquarium to Let Their Cat Get Closer to His Fish BuddiesThe quote "Fish are friends, not food" from the movie Finding Nemo seems to apply perfectly to this family. Theybuilt a special custom aquarium to let their cat get closer to his fish buddies. The aquarium looks like a pretty normal one, except for one unique detail. The glass underneath is custom-made in a way that their cat is almost able to reach inside the tank. From the other videos uploaded, the two family cats take turns in peeking through the glass. The video shows how they really enjoy the company of the fishes. Stories like this show that animals can share their love for each other despite their differences.Image credit: @jasperthecatfish on TikTok#fish #cat #TikTok #pets #animals #aquarium
Meet Methuselah, The World's Oldest Aquarium FishThe Methuselah of the Bible lived 969 years. Scientists estimate that Methuselah the fish is probably just 90 years old, which is almost as ancient for a fish that has lived his life as an aquarium. The “his" is speculative. The scientists at the Steinhart Aquarium at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco aren’t sure if Methuselah is male or female. This fish can be difficult to sex.The Associated Press informs readers that the 4-foot long Methuselah is an Australian lungfish—a species known for its long lifespans. It’s an evolutionary oddity, having both functional lungs and gills. Scientists think that Methuselah and his/her kin bridge an evolutionary gap between fish and amphibians.Photo: California Academy of Sciences#fish
They Trained Goldfish to Drive a Car Back in 2014, a tech company rigged up a car for a goldfish to drive. That was to show off the technology, not to benefit the goldfish. But now, researchers at Ben-Gurion University in Beersheba, Israel, have trained six goldfish to use such a vehicle to go in a direction that will reward them with food. The "fish operated vehicle" is a water tank on wheels. Underwater cameras attached to a computer analyzed the fish's movements and relayed those movements to the vehicle, so that the car went in the direction the fish was swimming.
Small Fish Rained From the Sky in Texarkana, TexasIt’s raining fish, hallelujah! Just kidding. Residents in east Texas reported an instance of ‘fish rain’ in their area during a rainstorm. This unique event happened around late afternoon.According to James Audirsch, one of the witnesses, he and his co-worker heard loud noises and looked outside to see fish falling from the sky! “There was a loud crack of thunder and when we opened up the bay door,” he said. “I looked outside and it was raining real hard and a fish hit the ground, and then I said, ‘It’s raining fish!’ Brad was like, ‘No it’s not,’ and I’m like, ‘No, it really is!’ and fish were droppin’ here and everywhere.”According to experts, this was because of a rare meteorological phenomenon when a water spout over a body of water sucks up small creatures such as fish and frogs. This spout then carries them along and drops them, which causes a unique type of rain. I wonder what kind of animal rain will be next?Image credit: Bradd Pratt via ArkLaTex Homepage#rain #nature #meteorology #fishrain #fish #science
