For 31 Years Straight, Labrador Retrievers Remain Man's Favorite Best Friend
Every year, the American Kennel Club releases a top 10 list of the most popular dog breeds in the country. The latest rankings come out Tuesday, drawn from more than 800,000 purebred puppies and older pooches that joined the nation's oldest canine registry last year. Among 197 registered dog breeds, Labrador retrievers once again come out on top, continuing a 31-year streak as America’s most beloved canine. After Labs, the top 10 are:1.French bulldogs2.Golden retrievers3.German shepherds4.Poodles5.Bulldogs6.Beagles7.Rottweilers8.German shorthaired pointers9.DachshundsWhile the list remains largely unchanged year to year, some breeds see massive surges in popularity. Eight breeds, from the petite Pembroke Welsh corgi (#11) to the towering great Dane (#17), have entered the top 25 since the start of the century. French bulldogs, who ranked 71st in 2000, are now #2 and a common sight from TV commercials to cosmopolitan streets. The rarest breed last year was the Norwegian Lundehund, consistently rare in the U.S. The fox-like dogs boast extra toes and unusual flexibility that once helped them climb Norwegian cliffs to hunt puffins (Lundehund is literally "puffin dog") nesting in narrow crevices.Image: Blue Bird/Pexels#LabradorRetriever #dog #PopularDogBreeds #AmericanKennelClub #AKC
Mudi and Russian Toy: Two New Dog Breeds Officially Recognized by the American Kennel Club
The American Kennel Club (AKC) has added two new breeds to its purebred dog registry: the Mudi and the Russian Toy. They have received full recognition and are now eligible to compete in the Herding Group and Toy Group, respectively. The Mudi is a medium-sized herding dog that is very energetic and likes to have good runs. The breed is an all-purpose farm dog from Hungary and is often used to work with stubborn livestock. Mudis are courageous, loyal, and protective of family members. They’re also relatively low maintenance when it comes to grooming: the occasional baths and combing or brushing would be enough for this breed. The Russian Toy may be tiny dogs, but they have big personalities! Dating back to the Russian aristocracies, the Russian Toy are active, lively and cheerful with a strong desire to please their humans. This breed loves to snuggle and be close to their family, and thrive on human company. Russian Toy comes in two coat types: longhaired, which require regular brushing of two to three times per week and a monthly bath, and the smooth coat which only needs weekly brushing and the occasional bath. With the addition of the Mudi and the Russian Toy, the official breed recognized by the AKC currently stands at 199.More information: Meet the Mudi and Meet the Russian ToyImages: Blue Merle Mudi by Taru T Torpstrom and Russian Toy via Wikimedia#dog #Mudi #RussianToy #AKC
