The Garfield Movie opened over the holiday weekend, and came in second behind Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga at the box office. The cat Garfield has been entertaining people for 46 years in comic strips, as he acts in typical lazy cat fashion and eats lasagna. We can relate to Garfield's craving for lasagna, because lasagna is wonderful. It also explains why he's fat. But do real cats eat lasagna? The answer is no. Or they shouldn't.
Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they get their nutrition from meat. Sure, lasagna contains meat, but it's just one of many ingredients. Cats might love cheese, but it's not good for them as most adult cats are lactose intolerant. Pasta is okay for cats, but cats don't normally seek out carbohydrates and may even regurgitate it, as they would the nutritionally useless parts of a prey animal. That leaves plenty of other ingredients, which can be harmful to cats. Mental Floss explains what lasagna ingredients cats can and cannot tolerate, and they even give us a cat-friendly lasagna recipe involving cat food, if you are inclined to feed your pet a cinematic treat. I think I'll skip that part. Lasagna is for people who appreciate good food.
