Pinecrest, a residential suburb of Miami, is a lovely place the attracts people who want their own slice of paradise close to nature. But, sometimes, nature is a little too close.
The peacocks have become a problem. The feral peacock population has grown so large that the beautiful birds are no longer a cute attraction. When the birds violently protect their nests, they become a threat to the dominant human species.
NBC News reports that the town is capturing males, sterilizing them, and then releasing them back into the wild. These are not neutering operations, but vasectomies that leave the male birds’ hormones intact and just remove their ability to reproduce. Each operation takes about an hour and a half.
