The Most Popular Cat Name in Each State

What should we name the new cat? You might get some guidance by seeing what everyone else is naming their cat, either to follow the trends or to avoid them. A survey of 50,000 cat names from members of TrustedHousesitters is a large sample, but still self-selected, so take that as you see fit. They've determined the most common cat name in the US for 2023 is Luna. The top five names in order for queens are Luna, Lucy, Bella, Sophie, and Stella. (Incidentally, those names are also quite popular for human baby girls.) The top five names for tomcats are Charlie, Leo, Max, Milo, and Jack. What's with all this giving human names to cats? But the common convention of naming cats after food is still with us.

Interestingly, roughly 13 percent of cats were found to have been named after a food or drink item. California, specifically, had the most cats named after food, with Pickles, Bean, Peanut, Taco, Sushi, and Pumpkin being popular choices in the top 100 names list. There are even multiple cats named Pop-Tart, Ramen, and Parmesan in the state.

That's more like it. I have a Marshmallow and a Sundae (short for Ice Cream Sundae). I saw a cat named Dogfood the other day on reddit and I mentally bookmarked that in case someone asks for a name suggestion. Read more about the cat name survey at Newsweek. -via Nag on the Lake ā€‹
