Sheriffs and Utility Workers Join Forces to Move Screech Owl Eggs

Instead of being in a tree nest, owl eggs were found in an old utility pole.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office reported that screech owl eggs were discovered by workers from Pike Electric while removing an old utility pole. The workers, together with the sheriff’s office’s Animal Services division, came up with an idea to relocate the soon-to-be owls.

A donated birdhouse was installed onto the new pole by utility worker Josh Hamel, facing the same direction as the old pole. After fixing the new home, he placed the owl eggs with the help of Officer Shannon McGee and his colleagues from Pike Electric.

Sheriff’s office reports — the old pole may be gone, but the nest of the birds was not compromised. Jensen Beach should soon welcome new baby owls.
