Catia Lattouf had some rough years. Her husband died in 2009, and not long afterward she was diagnosed with colon cancer. In 2012, a veterinarian friend talked her into nursing an injured hummingbird back to health. The nine months Lattouf spent with that bird pulled her out of her depression and gave her a new mission- to save hummingbirds who needed her. She sold her five Mexico City boutiques and opened a rehab center for hummingbirds in her apartment!
People began to bring Lattouf hummingbirds they found, and she takes in cases from the local campus of Mexico’s National Autonomous University ornithology department. Now, at age 73, Lattouf and one assistant care for up to 60 hummingbirds at a time, whether they are sick from contaminated water or were injured by predators or fell out of their nest.
