Romance among Mudskippers

When they get home from school, I’m going to tell my kids that this is how their mother and I met.

It would not be terribly untrue. There’s something familiar in the courtship rituals of the mudskipper fish, which are named for their amphibious abilities in muddy shoreline biomes. This clip from the long-running PBS science show Nature shows what happens when scientists introduce a robotic simulated lover to the sexual marketplace.

Fortunately for the wellbeing of mudskipper species, the lovely female chooses an actual male of her species over the camera-equipped robot that is objectively handsome by mudskipper standards.
