Who doesn’t love cats? These felines are intelligent and spunky beings, full of life and character. They can be the comforting roommate you can lean on when you’re sad, or be a servant to their endless whims. You can also be both!
One of the things that also made them lovable by pet lovers is their varied fur colors and patterns. “Cats have a combination of about three colors, which include red, white, and black,” vet expert Grant Little, DVM, shared. “All the various combinations you see of the other colors have to do with dilutions to these colors in the gene code, as well as ways that they have been bred over time to preserve those genetic variations.”
We know that black, orange, and white are common cat colors. But what about rare ones? Well, Reader’s Digest talked to cat experts to determine what they are. One of the rare hues is actually, believe it or not, cream. Cats of this color have a soft white and orange undertone. Cream cats are actually considered an orange cat breed. “This color is derived from red or ginger coloring with the influence of a dilution gene on the distribution of yellow pigment granule,” Veterinarian Lindsay Butzer, DVM, said.
