New York Dog Swam All the Way to New Jersey

Ellen Wolpin got her son a puppy, a Leonberger-Bernese mountain dog mix they named Bear. On Saturday, after having Bear for only a couple of weeks, Wolpin took the dog out in Manhattan to get him a better fitting harness. The 6-month-old pup slipped out of the original ill-fitting harness on 80th street and ran off. He ran 30 blocks to 110th street and jumped into the Hudson River! Wolpin tried to enlist help, but authorities didn't consider it an emergency -until Bear went into the river. Patrol boats went out looking for the dog, but came back empty-handed.

On Tuesday, police in Edgewater, New Jersey, got a call about a dog stuck under a pier. They retrieved the dog by boat and took him to Oradell Animal Hospital, where the staff found he was microchipped. Wolpin was contacted and told that her dog was in New Jersey! The Hudson River is about a mile wide at that point. Bear is back home now, and we hope he has learned not to wander so far away. -via Boing Boing ā€‹
