An internet sensation mountain gorilla took her dying breaths in the arms of her rescuer, caretaker, and friend, Andre Bauma. The orphaned mountain gorilla, Ndakasi, was under the care of the Park’s Senkwekwe Center for more than a decade.
Fourteen years ago, Virunga Rangers found Ndakasi clinging to the lifeless body of her mother. They took the gorilla to a rescue center in Goma since there was no other family present.
Ndakasi rose to internet fame in 2019 when a selfie of her went viral on Earth day. It was a photo of Ndakasi together with her partner-in-crime, Ndeze, standing relaxed on two feet, bellies out with cheeky grins.
Bauma, her keeper, was grateful for the privilege of taking care of Ndakasi. He witnessed how the gorilla suffered at a very young age. He reminds us that we should do everything in our power to protect animals.
