A margay is a small cat native to Central and South America. They live in tropical rainforests where they roam through the trees, hunting birds, lizards, and monkeys. The margay resembles an ocelot, but it has the distinctive feature of being able to rotate its ankles 180 degrees, which allows it to climb down trees as well as it climbs up! Margay populations have been declining, first from hunting, and now from deforestation. But there's a global breeding program for this near-threatened species.
The Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay, Wales, is proud to announce the birth of a new margay kitten named Goose. Margays typically only have one kitten at a time, and unlike other cats, the mother only has two teats. The kitten is part of an international margay breeding program. Goose was born several weeks ago and is thriving under the supervision of his parents, Sonora and Maverick. Goose is already shown interest in climbing trees! -via Farkā
