No one wants to think about your beloved dog, cat, or other animal dying, but it's a subject we should think about, because they tend to live much shorter lives than we humans do. The best case scenario is that your pet has a long and happy life before succumbing to old age. However, when a pet is suffering from the maladies that come at the end of a long life, it is merciful to end that pain. Saying goodbye is heartbreaking for us, but there are things you can do to make it less stressful for your pet, and leave us with peace about they way they left.
The most important thing you can do is stay with your cat or dog when they are being euthanized. After you've been connected for so long, the presence of their human is the least we can do. If you know when the time will come, you may have time to make those last days as happy for your pet as you possibly can. More and more pet owners are doing "bucket lists" for a pet's last days, meaning giving Fido or Fluffy experiences they most enjoy. This can include trips to their favorite places, favorite foods -even forbidden foods- and most importantly, spending time with the people they love most.

Your pet's bucket list must accommodate their abilities, and may take some planning. A dog that can no longer walk can still visit the beach if you pull him in a wagon. Treats are great, as long as they don't cause your pet more immediate pain. Remember, a sick or weak animal will likely be happiest just spending quality time with you. See how other people use those last days to make a pet's life as happy as possible in a roundup at HuffPo. They also have advice from experts in animal hospice care. Knowing that you did what you could for them will leave you with precious memories of a true friend, and no regrets. -via Digg
