Tara, Noorjahan, and Esha are Asian elephants that live at the zoo of Blackpool, UK. The zookeepers want to keep track of their fertility cycles, so, the Shropshire Star reports, they are feeding these ladies food with different colors of glitter in it. The zookeepers then collect the poop from the enclosure about twice a week, sort it by glitter color, and perform chemical tests for pregnancy.
This is a simple yet practical solution that, the Blackpool Zoo hopes, will allow for zoos to increase the population of Asian elephants. This species has been endangered since 1986.
