Baby Armadillo Lizards Bite Their own Tails to Protect Their Bellies

Newborn armadillo girdled lizards bite their tails and curl up their bodies into a ball to protect their soft underbellies from potential predators such as birds of prey and jackals.

Based on the video, the baby armadillo lizard (Ouroborus cataphractus) looks like a scaly, wingless dragon. They were born at the Vienna Zoo in the Austrian capital which claims to be the oldest zoo in the world. These species are endemic to the desert areas on the western coast of South Africa.

According to Zoo Director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck, there are only five zoos where these species live, and for an offspring to be born and survive is very special.
