A Fish Gets an MRI

In August, The Denver Zoo posted on Instagram this remarkable image of a French Angelfish entering a MRI machine. The staff at Tropical Discovery, which is the aquarium facility within the zoo complex, noticed that the fish was swimming oddly and displayed “buoyancy issues.”

They took the fish to the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Animal Hospital, where veterinarians sedated him and, while flushing water over his gills, performed a MRI scan.

The Associated Press reports that the fish was diagnosed with enteritis, which means inflamed intestines. After receiving antibiotics, the fish recovered and returned to the aquarium.
